Edge banding or edgebanding is both a method and a small strip of material used in finishing carpentry to produce durable and visually beautiful trim edges.

Covering the exposed sides of materials such as plywood, particle board, or MDF with edge banding increases their durability and gives them the impression of being solid or more expensive. Face frames and moulding are typical alternatives to edgebanding. Edge banding is available in a variety of materials, including as PVC, ABS, acrylic, melamine, wood, and wood veneer.

Traditional edge banding required the use of common carpentry equipment and materials. In current applications, especially for high-volume, repeated production procedures such as cabinet doors, edge banding is applied to the substrate utilising a hot-melt adhesive and an automated process. Hot melt adhesives may consist of EVA, PUR, PA, APOA, and PO, among other basic ingredients. In addition to acting as a bonding agent between the adhesive and the substrate, a substrate primer may also be employed. Typically, thicker edge bandings need a modest concavity to provide a tight glue line. The thickness might range from.018″ to at least 5mm. The machine used to apply edge banding is known as an edgebander. The edgebander adheres the edge banding to the substrate, trims the leading and trailing edges, trims the top and bottom edges level with the substrate, discards the excess, and buffs the edge.

Thermoplastic Edgebanding is made using an extruder, a machine that consists of a loading system for raw materials, a screw inside a barrel that melts and transports the raw materials (plastics PVC, ABS, PP, PMMA and colour pigments) through a die that shapes the edgebanding to the required dimensions.
